Chaudhary Charan Singh University (CCSU), formerly known as Meerut University, is a prominent public state university located in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India.
The university was established in 1965 with the aim of providing higher education to the students of Western Uttar Pradesh.[1] It was renamed in 1991 in honor of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh on the occasion of its Silver Jubilee.
History
- 1965: Established as Meerut University.
- 1969: Introduction of research programmes like M.Phil and Ph.D.[2]
- 1973: Commencement of postgraduate teaching departments.
- 1980s–1990s: Growth of affiliated colleges in Arts, Science, Commerce, and Law streams.
- 1991: Renamed to Chaudhary Charan Singh University to honor the legacy of a peasant leader and India’s former Prime Minister.[3]
- 2000s–Present: Major focus on self-financed courses, digitization, smart classes, and NAAC accreditation.
Campus
The university campus is spread across 222 acres in an urban setting in Meerut. It is well-equipped with:

- Central Library with 1.5 lakh+ books, journals, and e-resources
- A Botanical Garden and Rose Garden with a statue of Chaudhary Charan Singh
