The university's historical development began with Muir Central College which Sir William Muir established in 1873 and later transformed into the current university. The Governor of Uttar Pradesh serves as the Chief Rector of the university. The Governor functions as the primary state-level supervision authority through this position. The Chief Rector maintains university-state government relations through policy implementation and administrative functions and development activities.
