Jolly LLB is a 2013 Hindi movie that mixes comedy and courtroom drama. It was written and directed by Subhash Kapoor and produced by Fox Star Studios. Released on 15 March 2013, it stars Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani, Amrita Rao, and Saurabh Shukla.
The story is about a young lawyer, Jagdish Tyagi (called Jolly), who tries to get justice for six innocent workers. He fights against the unfair power of the rich and corruption in the legal system.
The movie is inspired by the 1999 Sanjeev Nanda hit-and-run case, with a small reference to the Priyadarshini Mattoo case.
Plot
In 2009, Jagdish Tyagi, also called Jolly, is a lawyer in Delhi. He lives with his sister’s husband, Pratap, and is dating Sandhya. One day, he sees famous lawyer Tejinder Rajpal win a case for Rahul Dewan, a rich boy accused of drunk driving a Land Cruiser and killing six workers sleeping on a footpath.
Wanting money and fame, Jolly files a PIL against Rahul. His neighbour, Kaul Saab, gives him his office to work from. Kaul Saab’s own daughter was raped and murdered by a policeman’s son, whom Rajpal had also saved in court. He hopes Jolly will get justice.
Judge Sunderlal Tripathi scolds Jolly for weak evidence and asks him to bring solid proof. Jolly meets Albert Pinto, who says he saw the accident, but later finds out he works for Rajpal. Pinto takes money from the Dewan family, gives Jolly a share, and lies in court. Sandhya and Kaul Saab shame Jolly for selling out, so he returns the money and challenges Rajpal.
With Pratap’s help, Jolly finds video footage of the accident. Rajpal claims it’s fake and says the driver was responsible. Jolly cross-examines the driver, who admits he lied. The judge gives Jolly a police bodyguard after Rajpal’s men attack him. Still, corrupt officer Rathi, who works for Rajpal, tries to stop him.
Jolly learns that Sadakant Mishra, the only survivor, lives in Gorakhpur. After many hurdles, Jolly brings him to court. Mishra tells the truth: Rahul drove over the sleeping workers, then reversed to kill Mishra but only crushed his leg. Rathi threatened Mishra and forced him to give up money and jewellery for his sister’s wedding to be released. Mishra identifies Rahul as the driver.
After final arguments, Judge Tripathi suspends Rathi, orders an inquiry, finds Rahul guilty, and sentences him to seven years in jail. Jolly is praised for his victory, while Rajpal sits defeated for the first time
