Sayantani Putatunda (born 31 July 1985) is an acclaimed Indian author and screenwriter from Kolkata, known for her fearless and unconventional narratives in Bengali literature. Her works span multiple genres including thrillers, political fiction, horror, and romance, and are recognized for breaking traditional stereotypes and exploring bold themes such as female feticide, child trafficking, LGBTQ+ love, and psychological horror.[1] She is best known for writing the story of the national award-winning film Shankhachil, and for the bestselling web series Nandini.[2]

Early Life and Education

Born into a royal and culturally rich Brahmin family in Kolkata, Sayantani was deeply influenced by authors like Agatha Christie, O. Henry, Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay, and Mahasweta Devi. She began writing at the age of 12. She completed her schooling from Jadavpur Vidyapith, her B.A. in Bengali literature from Presidency College (now Presidency University), and her M.A. from the University of Calcutta.

Career

Sayantani’s literary journey began with her early novel Anandadhara. She has authored over 40 books, including popular titles like *Shishmahal*, *Sarbaanashini*, *Bahurupi*, *Chupichupi Aschhe*, and the *Adhiraj Series*.[3] Her works often challenge genre conventions — her thrillers avoid invincible heroes, and her horror stories focus on psychological realism over supernatural elements.

She has received numerous awards including:

  • Mitra o Ghosh Smriti Puraskar
  • Shailajananda Smriti Puraskar
  • E-bela Ajeya Award
  • Eela Chanda Smriti Award (Bangiya Sahitya Parishad)
  • Best Pensmith Award
  • Nari Shakti Award
  • Nari Ratna Iconic Award
  • Excellency Iconic Award
  • She-The Starpower Award

She represented Bengal in the Sahitya Akademi’s Yuva Sahiti program and was the first Indian VR film writer to represent India at an international VR/AR/XR summit in China.

Contribution to Cinema

Her novel-based film Shankhachil, directed by Goutam Ghose, won the 63rd National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali. Another of her stories, Nandini, became a hit web series. She has also contributed to works like *Jio Jamai* and *Singholagna*.
