Production

Ajay Devgn returns in Son of Sardaar 2, playing the same character he played in the first film. At first, Sanjay Dutt was also supposed to return, but he could not join the UK shoot because his visa application was rejected. So, the filmmakers replaced him with actor Ravi Kishan for the scenes in the UK.

However, Sanjay Dutt later confirmed that he is still part of the movie, but he will not appear in the parts that were filmed in the UK. Another actor, Vijay Raaz, was also signed for a role but was later removed from the project.

The shooting of the movie started in July 2024 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The schedule there lasted for about 50 days. After that, the crew moved to other locations in the UK, including London and the Firth of Forth, to shoot more scenes.

Later, filming also took place in Punjab, India, to capture some important parts of the story. In April 2025, actress Kubbra Sait completed her dubbing work for the film, which means she recorded her voice for her scenes.

Reception

Critical response

Dhaval Roy from The Times of India gave the film 3 out of 5 stars. He said the movie was funny at times but had too many characters and storylines. The songs and dances made the film feel longer, and the ending was confusing and over-the-top.[5]

Rishabh Suri from Hindustan Times also gave 3 stars out of 5. He liked the acting and said it was a light and fun comedy with simple writing and interesting characters.[6]

Nishad Thaivalappil from CNN-News18 also gave 3 stars, saying the actors did well, but the jokes weren’t very funny.[7]

Vineeta Kumar from India Today gave the film 2.5 stars out of 5. She said the movie tried to mix jokes about India and Pakistan with a love story, but it didn’t have the charm of the first movie. She also felt that Ajay Devgn and Mrunal Thakur didn’t look natural as a couple.[8]

Bollywood Hungama gave 2 stars out of 5. They liked the story idea, background music, and how the film looked. But they didn’t like the songs or the comedy.[9]

Shubhra Gupta from The Indian Express gave it 2 stars too. She liked Deepak Dobriyal’s performance as a trans character but said the film tried to be a fast-paced comedy and failed.[10]

Saibal Chatterjee from NDTV gave it 1.5 stars out of 5. He said the film wasn’t funny and didn’t come together well, though Ravi Kishan had a few good moments. He praised the camera work.[11]

Lachmi Deb Roy from Firstpost also gave 1.5 stars, calling the movie “cringe” and saying it wasn’t even a real comedy. She felt the humour was very poor.[12]

Shreyas Pande from Cinema Express gave only 1 star. He said the movie was promoted as a family film, but many jokes were uncomfortable and inappropriate for families.[13]

Rahul Desai from The Hollywood Reporter India said the movie was more open-minded than many other Bollywood films. But he also said it was hard to tell if the jokes were meant to be funny or not.[14]
