It is a partial remake of the 2004 Telugu film Varsham. The film was released on 29 April 2016 and received mixed reviews from critics. Made on a budget of ₹35 crore, it grossed over ₹129 crore worldwide. The film later spawned two sequels, Baaghi 2 (2018) and Baaghi 3 (2020), making it the first film in the Baaghi series.
