The State vs. Jolly LL.B. 2, also called Jolly LLB 2, is a 2017 Hindi black comedy courtroom drama written and directed by Subhash Kapoor. It is the sequel to the 2013 film Jolly LLB. Akshay Kumar plays the main role of lawyer Jagdishwar Mishra, replacing Arshad Warsi from the first film. The movie also stars Huma Qureshi, Annu Kapoor, Kumud Mishra, and Saurabh Shukla, who returns from the original.

Set in Lucknow, the story is about a lawyer who takes on a powerful and corrupt advocate to get justice for a victim of a fake police encounter involving a dishonest officer and a terrorist thought to be dead.

The film was released worldwide on 10 February 2017. Made for ₹450 million (US$5.3 million), it earned ₹2 billion (US$24 million) worldwide. It was both a critical and commercial success, with praise for Subhash Kapoor’s writing and direction, and for the acting of Akshay Kumar, Saurabh Shukla, Annu Kapoor, and Kumud Mishra.

A third film, Jolly LLB 3, will release on 19 September 2025, with Kumar and Shukla returning, and Warsi also coming back to play his role from the first film.

Plot

Jagdishwar "Jolly" Mishra is a lawyer in Lucknow who lives with his wife, Pushpa Pandey, and their son. Even though he is a lawyer, he works as an assistant to Mr. Rizvi, a famous lawyer in the city. Jolly’s father also worked for Mr. Rizvi for 30 years. Jolly is smart and streetwise, and dreams of having his own law office.

To get money for his office, Jolly tricks a widow named Hina Qasim by telling her that Mr. Rizvi will take her case and the fee is ₹200,000. When Hina finds out the truth, she kills herself. Jolly then learns that Hina’s husband, Iqbal Qasim, was killed in a fake police encounter on 13 August 2015, the day after their wedding. Inspector Suryaveer Singh falsely claimed that Qasim was a terrorist named Mohammed Iqbal Quadri. Singh even killed a fellow constable, Baldev Singh Bhadauria, to make the encounter look real.

Feeling guilty, Jolly decides to fight Hina’s case and files a public interest litigation (PIL). Singh hires the city’s best lawyer, Pramod Mathur, to defend him. The judge, Justice Sunderlal Tripathi, scolds Jolly for mistakes in the PIL and lack of proof, but gives him time to gather evidence.

Jolly sells his own office to pay ₹500,000 to a bookie named Guru Ji, who helps him get copies of the FIR and other case papers. He also finds Ram Kumar Bhadauria, the dead constable’s son, but Mathur uses his influence to tamper with the video of Ram’s narco test. Jolly is almost punished for showing false evidence, but Mr. Rizvi, who heads the disciplinary committee, gives him four more days to prove the case.

While looking at Hina and Qasim’s wedding album, Jolly notices a policeman from Kashmir named Fahim Bhat. Jolly travels to Kashmir, where Fahim tells him that Qasim was innocent and that he filed a complaint against Singh. Fahim has been suspended and falsely charged. Jolly brings Fahim to Lucknow.

Jolly pressures Police Commissioner V.K. Paul to tell the truth or face a PIL against all his encounters. In court, Mathur tries to block Fahim from testifying by protesting, but Justice Tripathi refuses to stop the proceedings.

Late at night, Fahim gives his statement. Jolly then brings in the real Quadri, who is pretending to be a Brahmin priest. Jolly quickly questions him about religious texts, and Quadri finally admits he is the terrorist and that he bribed Singh to free him.

Justice Tripathi declares Qasim innocent, orders Quadri’s arrest, and gives Singh and his team life in prison for murder, destroying evidence, lying to the court, and showing false evidence. Jolly wins the case.
