Shriram Gopal Kanitkar
Prof. Dr. Shriram Gopal Kanitkar is an Indian educationist, engineer, inventor, researcher, author and entrepreneur hailing from Sangli, Maharashtra. Many people know him for what he’s done in technical education, engineering innovation, renewable energy research, and also industrial development, kind of all at once. During his long and notable career, he worked in several roles like lecturer, professor, principal, education administrator, researcher and industrialist, and still kept pushing forward for engineering education and better technological progress inside India .
Early Life & Education
Prof. Dr. Shriram Gopal Kanitkar, was born on 3 August 1942 in Sangli, Maharashtra , India. He went through his primary education in a municipal school and then continued his schooling in Sangli only. It was kind of steady. Not too many twists there.
Between 1960 and 1964, he earned a Diploma in Engineering, and afterwards he completed his Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering. Later on, he also obtained a Master of Engineering (M.E.) in Machine Design, with First Class and Distinction. So basically, academically he kept moving up step by step.
In his student years, he was recognized for both strong scholastic results and leadership ability. He received the Best Student Award and the Best Captain Award, and he led the college cricket and hockey teams. Besides that, he picked up various prizes in technical exhibitions and product display competitions too. One of his early innovations was a battery operated vehicle, and it fetched a special prize from the well known industrialist Lalchand Hirachand.
Career
After finishing his education, Prof. Kanitkar started his professional journey in technical education as a lecturer in engineering , not long after. With his hard work, guidance, and consistent academic strength , he went up step by step into multiple important roles like Professor, Head of Department , Principal of Polytechnic, Head of the Training and Placement Cell, Chairman of the Walchand College Gymkhana, and even University Students' Representative for the Engineering Faculty. In the long run of his academic career , he took on a real key part in reinforcing technical education, nurturing learner growth and raising institutional quality, bit by bit.
His efforts did not go unnoticed. He received the Best Polytechnic Teacher Award from the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), and also the Best Principal Award from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Mumbai. During his tenure , the colleges and institutions under him earned the Best Polytechnic College Award on multiple occasions too, which, in a sense , shows how seriously he treated academic excellence and educational innovation.
Notable Works
Prof. Kanitkar , has made significant contributions to engineering research—technological innovation, education ,and industrial development really throughout his career. If we look at his main achievements it includes things like the development of a Non-Contact Torque Dynamometer (also called Contactless Dynamometer), plus pioneering research on electricity generation from sea waves, the creation of a solar energy-based desalination system to convert seawater into drinkable water, and the design of a Mango Pulp Production Machine.
He’s also been involved in manufacturing and development of refrigeration and cooling systems including freezers, deep freezers, air-conditioning equipment ,pre-cooling systems ,cold storage units and even ice plants, for agricultural applications. And besides these technical innovations, he wrote the technical reference book Industrial Organisation & Management and also the Marathi poetry collection Kavya-Sampada.
Overall, his work has stayed quite grounded, focused on practical engineering solutions, renewable energy technologies, industrial output ,and sustainable growth.
