Ryan David Rickelton is a South African international cricketer who plays as a left-handed wicket-keeper batter. He represents Gauteng in domestic cricket and MI Cape Town in franchise cricket. Rickelton made his international debut for South Africa in March 2022 and has since established himself as a key player in the national side. He was part of the South African team which won the ICC World Test Championship in 2025.[1]

Ryan Rickelton was born on 11 July 1996 in South Africa. From his early childhood he demonstrated his exceptional cricket abilities which coaches started to recognize during his early years.

He developed his cricket abilities through school cricket and club cricket because he grew up in a cricket-focused environment. South Africa’s strong domestic cricket structure helped him refine his technique and game awareness.

Domestic Career

Ryan Rickelton began his professional journey with Gauteng starting from his first-class debut match against Northerns. He rapidly built his reputation as an dependable wicket-keeper who batted in the first two batting positions.

He made his T20 debut for Gauteng on 1 September 2017 during the Africa T20 Cup. His consistent performances helped him rise through the ranks which led to him getting chances to play with Highveld Lions and Jozi Stars.[3]

Rickelton emerged as Gauteng's highest run scorer when he accumulated 351 runs across eight matches in the 2017-18 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge. He further established his ability to perform consistently by scoring 562 runs in six matches in the Sunfoil 3-Day Cup.[4]

The Imperial Lions selected him as their captain because his leadership abilities were recognized by others.

International Career

Rickelton started his international career when South Africa selected him for their T20I squad in 2021. His domestic cricket performances and his time with South Africa A, helped him to maintain his position.

He made his Test debut on 31 March 2022 against Bangladesh. His ODI debut happened on 18 March 2023 when he played against the West Indies.
