Early Life & Education
Amaal Mallik was born on 16 June 1990 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, into a musically rich family. From an early age, he was surrounded by instruments, rehearsals, and studio sessions, which naturally led to the development of a strong passion for music. Amaal was captivated by melodies, piano, guitar, and rhythm arrangements, in contrast to most kids who tended toward sports or acting. He had already started experimenting with his own compositions and helping his father with studio recordings by the time he was a teenager, setting the groundwork for his future profession.
Before attending N.M. College of Commerce & Economics to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce, Amaal finished his education at Mumbai's Jamnabai Narsee School. In addition to his academic pursuits, he received formal training at Trinity College of Music in London in Western Classical, Jazz, and Piano. This combination of traditional academics with specialized music training not only refined his technical understanding but also shaped his versatility as a composer and musician.
Career
Amaal Mallik started his career in the background before entering the spotlight as a full-fledged composer. He helped with recordings, jingles, and background scores for well-known music directors like Amar Mohile and Pritam. He was able to hone his technical abilities and obtain useful industry experience during these formative years, setting him up for greater opportunities.
Salman Khan's movie Jai Ho in 2014 marked Amaal's Bollywood composing debut. He made his debut as a new talent in the industry with the well-received song Naina. His independent career as a composer for popular films began with this early success.
Soon after, he made his big break with hits in some of Bollywood's biggest movies. While Kapoor & Sons (2016) gave viewers Kar Gayi Chull and the heartfelt Bolna, Roy (2015) featured the wildly popular party anthem Sooraj Dooba Hain. Songs like Besabriyaan and Kaun Tujhe from the 2016 soundtrack of M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story further solidified his position. Subsequently, Amaal performed iconic songs like Tum Hi Aana in Kabir Singh (2019) and Roke Na Ruke Naina in Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017). He became one of Bollywood's most versatile composers thanks to his ability to move fluidly between lively party songs and romantic ballads.
In addition to movies, Amaal has established a solid reputation in the independent music industry. Singles like Ghar Se Nikalte Hi and Tu Mera Nahi, along with collaborations with leading music labels such as T-Series and Sony Music, made him a youth favorite. He also showcased his personality on television, serving as a judge and mentor on music reality shows, where his candid nature and sharp musical insights earned him both admiration and critique.
