Yogi Adityanath (Ajay Mohan Singh Bisht) is an Indian Hindu monk and politician serving as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh since 19 March 2017. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he is the first CM of the state to serve two consecutive terms and one of India’s most influential political leaders. Known for his strong law-and-order governance, Yogi has built a distinct political identity around Hindutva and administrative discipline.
Early Life and Education
Yogi Adityanath was born on 5 June 1972 in Panchur village, Pauri Garhwal (then in Uttar Pradesh, now in Uttarakhand) to Anand Singh Bisht, a forest ranger, and Savitri Devi. He completed his B.Sc. in Mathematics from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University.
In his youth, he became deeply influenced by Hindu nationalism and later joined the Ayodhya Ram Temple movement. During this time, he met Mahant Avaidyanath, the head priest of Gorakhnath Math in Gorakhpur, who became his spiritual mentor. After Avaidyanath’s death in 2014, Adityanath succeeded him as the Mahant (head priest) of the Gorakhnath Math.
Early Political Career
Yogi Adityanath entered politics in 1998 when he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) from Gorakhpur at the age of 26 — becoming one of India’s youngest MPs. He went on to win the Lok Sabha elections from the same constituency in 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014.
He also founded the Hindu Yuva Vahini, a youth organization aimed at promoting Hindu unity and social work in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
