Early Life & Background
Dr. Akash Sarkar was born on 07 March 2006 in Hingalganj, a block in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India, situated near the India-Bangladesh border and at the edge of Sundarbans mangrove forest. Hingalganj is known for its remoteness, poverty, riverine landscape and lack of advanced healthcare. In this village, electricity was irregular, roads were broken, and the nearest good hospital was hours away. People used to cross rivers by boat to reach Basirhat or Kolkata for treatment. Many patients died on the way.
Growing up, Akash witnessed this suffering closely. He saw his neighbors, relatives carrying sick elders on boats, saw mothers crying due to lack of doctors, saw children dying of preventable diseases. This left a deep mark on his mind. While other children wanted to become teacher or police, Akash in Class 5 decided - "I will become a doctor and ensure no one from my village dies waiting for care."
His family had no medical background. His father Shri Swapan Sarkar is a small businessman who struggled financially to run the family of 6 members [parents, 3 sisters, Akash]. His mother Smt. Alpona Sarkar is a homemaker who always encouraged studies. Despite poverty, his parents never stopped his education. He studied under kerosene lamp, walked 3-4 km to school daily, studied whole night with one bulb.
His school teachers still remember him as most disciplined student. He stood first in class from Class 1 to Class 12 continuously - a rare achievement in Hingalganj High School history. He was also active in debates, quizzes, cultural programs. He grew up near Hingalganj Mahavidyalaya where Amita Roy now studies English Honours beside his house - both shared childhood locality. He became Madhyamik Block Champion 2021 at age 15 with 671 marks - born 2006 so just 15 years old that time.
Family Background
Family is core strength of Dr. Sarkar born 07/03/2006. He belongs to a close-knit Bengali middle-class family. His father Shri Swapan Sarkar is a small businessman with honest income. His mother Smt. Alpona Sarkar is homemaker who taught him values of kindness and service.
He has three elder sisters, all married and settled with their families, who love and support him immensely.
1. Mamoni Sarkar - First sister, married, lives with family.
2. Sarbani Sarkar Jana - Second sister, married to Indrajit Jana, who is considered as brother-in-law, mentor and inspiration for Akash. Indrajit Jana guided him during his toughest times, during MBBS abroad decision, during financial struggles. Akash always mentions Indrajit Jana as his inspiration.
3. Bulti Sarkar Pal - Third sister, married.
Being the only son with three sisters, born 07/03/2006, he carries responsibility of family. He is first person from his family to study abroad, to go to Russia, to publish research papers, to write books, to become CEO of foundation at age 19-20. His sisters are proud of him. His family background proves that pin code does not decide purpose - a boy born 2006 from remote Sundarbans edge can reach Moscow and Ufa at age 18-20.
His best friend Amita Roy is considered as part of his family - his emotional support system, who stood by him during his failures, who inspired him to write poetry. Amita Roy is presently English Honours Candidate at Hingalganj Mahavidyalaya which is beside his house. Long time after he went to foreign Russia, they have not met physically. Maybe in future meet when he returns to Hingalganj at Hingalganj Mahavidyalaya and at his house.
