Ratan Tata was born on 28 December 1937 in Mumbai, India, into the prominent Tata family. He is the son of Naval Tata and Sooni Commissariat. After his parents’ separation, he was raised by his grandmother, Navajbai Tata.
He attended Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai and later pursued a degree in architecture from Cornell University, graduating in 1962. In 1975, he completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
Career
Ratan Tata began his career at Tata Steel in 1962. He was appointed chairman of Tata Sons in 1991, succeeding J. R. D. Tata. Under his leadership, the Tata Group expanded globally, acquiring companies such as Tetley (2000), Corus (2007), and Jaguar Land Rover (2008).
He also played a pivotal role in the development of the Tata Nano, aiming to provide affordable transportation to the masses.
Philanthropy
Ratan Tata was known for his philanthropic efforts, primarily through Tata Trusts, which own a significant portion of Tata Sons. The Trusts focus on various areas, including education, healthcare, and rural development.
Personal Life
Tata remained unmarried throughout his life. He was known for his modest lifestyle and passion for animals, particularly dogs.
Death and Legacy
Ratan Tata passed away on 9 October 2024 in Mumbai at the age of 86. His death was widely mourned across India and the business community worldwide. His legacy includes transforming the Tata Group into a global conglomerate and his extensive philanthropic contributions.
