Rishab Shetty (Prashanth Shetty) is an Indian actor, director, producer and screenwriter who works primarily in Kannada cinema.[1] He became well-known throughout the country thanks to his critically acclaimed films, including Kirik Party (2016) and Kantara (2022), the latter of which became a pan-India blockbuster. Shetty has made a name for himself in the Kannada film industry by fusing traditional storytelling with modern techniques.

Early Life & Education

Rishab Shetty was born on 7 July 1983 in Keradi village, Kundapura Taluk of Udupi District, Karnataka, into a Bunt family.[2][3][4][5] After completing his education in Kundapura, he enrolled at Vijaya College in Bengaluru to work toward a B.Com. He performed in Yakshagana plays and was heavily involved in theater while he was a student. Stage plays in Bengaluru stoked his love of acting and inspired him to pursue a career in film.

In order to launch his career in the Kannada film industry, Shetty also obtained a diploma in film direction from the Government Film and TV Institute in Bangalore.

Career

Shetty started out in the movie business as an assistant director, spot boy, and clap boy. "Tuglak" (2012) was his first acting role.[6] Later, he played a police officer in "Lucia," and his role in "Ulidavaru Kandante" (2014) brought him fame.

With "Ricky," which starred Rakshit Shetty, Shetty made his directorial debut in 2016. He then went on to make "Kirik Party," which was a huge commercial success and won him the Best Director Filmfare and SIIMA awards. His 2018 film "Sarkari Hi. Pra. Shaale, Kasaragodu, Koduge: Ramanna Rai" took home the Best Children's Film National Film Award.

As an actor, Shetty starred in the lead role of "Bell Bottom" (2019) and then gave a strong performance as gangster Hari in the critically acclaimed film "Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana" (2021).[7]

Shetty directed and starred in Hombale Films' 2022 production of "Kantara." It became the second highest-grossing Kannada film globally after first being released in Kannada and then gaining popularity throughout India.[8] He received the IFFI Special Jury Award in 2023 for his performance in "Kantara," which earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor.[9]
