Kapil Sharma is an Indian stand-up comedian, television host, actor, producer, dubbing artist, and singer who primarily works in Hindi entertainment. He is best known for hosting The Kapil Sharma Show and The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix. Sharma has won several awards, including five Indian Television Academy Awards. He gained national fame after winning The Great Indian Laughter Challenge season 3 in 2007.
Early Life & Education
Kapil Sharma was born in Amritsar, Punjab, into a Punjabi Sikh family. His father, Jeetendra Kumar Punj, worked as a head constable in the Punjab Police, and his mother, Janak Rani, is a homemaker. His father passed away in 2004 due to cancer.
Sharma studied at Shri Ram Ashram Senior Secondary School and Hindu College in Amritsar. He later became a prominent alumnus of Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar. He has one brother, Ashok Kumar Sharma, and a sister, Pooja.
Career
Kapil Sharma first became popular after winning The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007. He later won multiple seasons of Comedy Circus and participated in shows like Ustaadon Ka Ustaad and Star Ya Rockstar, where he finished as the second runner-up.
In 2013, he launched his own show, Comedy Nights with Kapil, which made him one of India’s most successful comedy hosts. He later created The Kapil Sharma Show, which ran multiple hit seasons.
Sharma made his Bollywood debut with Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon (2015), a commercial success. He later acted in Firangi (2017) and earned critical acclaim for his performance in Zwigato (2023).
In 2025, Kapil Sharma returns to films with Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, co-starring Manjot Singh, KRK, and others, marking his comeback to full-fledged comedy cinema.
In 2024, he launched The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix, reuniting with Sunil Grover and Archana Puran Singh.
Kapil Sharma also performs internationally and has dubbed for movies such as The Angry Birds Movie 2 (Hindi version).
