Ratnakar Pandey is an Indian stage singer, vocal artist and a former officer in the Indian Railways. People usually mention his distinguished run in the Railways, but also his performances as a live stage singer. He leans more toward ghazals, thumri, and well known classic Hindi songs, sort of his signature kind of range. After he retired from government service in 2020, he finally went all in with music, and now he shows up regularly at cultural events, public programs, and private functions too, sometimes as if it is already a routine.

Early Life & Education

Ratnakar Pandey was born on 21 November 1960 in Mughalsarai, Chandauli district , Uttar Pradesh . He was academically strong, and he grabbed the first position in the town of Mughalsarai. He completed his Intermediate Science (I.Sc.) from the Uttar Pradesh Board in 1978 and then he managed to qualify for admission to multiple Regional Engineering Colleges .

He earned a Bachelor of Engineering, Civil branch, from Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College (MNREC), Prayagraj, during 1978 to 1982. Later, he pursued an M.Tech in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 1984, and an M.Tech in Humanities from IIT Delhi in 1985 . Meanwhile, he also took a certificate in Urdu language studies, so his grasp for Urdu literature and ghazals stayed deeper , and more nuanced .

Career

Ratnakar Pandey entered Indian Railways through the UPSC examination, as a member of the 1983 batch. In his service he worked across different Zonal Railways, Production Units, and railway Electrification Projects throughout India. His day to day duties involved material handling, buying and procurement, logistics, and operational backing, all so the railway network could work safely, and keep functioning smoothly with proper maintenance.

He served in organizations including Central Railway , Western Railway , Eastern Railway , Northeast Frontier Railway , South Eastern Railway Rail Coach Factory Kapurthala, Diesel Locomotive Works Varanasi, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works , and Railway Electrification Projects. He also went through professional training at Railway Staff College Vadodara, plus a specialized program at Carnegie Mellon University, United States, in 2018 .

After he retired from Indian Railways in November 2020, with his last posting in Kolkata, he then shifted his focus toward music and stage performance, not just one thing. From 2022 onward he has been showing up for cultural programs, corporate events, railway officers club functions, and public festivals. Along with this, he is also a regular performer on the Starmaker platform.

Ratnakar Pandey lives in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. He is into music, literature, and travel , in a very consistent way. He also keeps performing on the Starmaker platform and continues growing his interest in Urdu poetry and ghazals, step by step, slowly but surely. He has traveled quite a lot both within India and abroad, including trips to the United States, and more.
