Early Life & Education

Er. Mandeep Singh was born on 8th March 1985 to a traditional Sikh family in New Delhi, India. He was the second male child and three years later his parents gave birth to a daughter. When he was born, his father & mother used to live in a close-knit joint family in their ancestral home but in 1994 when he was about 9-years-old his parents decided to separate from the rest of the family. The pain & grief of separation from rest of the family had left some emotional scars in Mandeep as a child but he was never forced or pressurized by his parents to ever stop visiting his relatives or cousins. He was particularly close to the elders of his relative families rather cousins and fondly enjoyed light-hearted moments and jokes with them. He would often continue visiting his relative’s family in the after school hours or spend a couple of days during school holidays at their place even until the age of eighteen before he was sent to another city for pursuing engineering. Among his own parents, Mandeep has always been very close to his mother and never tried to hide anything from her and his relationship with father is a quite formal one but friendly. He often used to help her mother in daily household chores and grocery shopping from the market. He always got along well with his real elder brother and younger sister even though there were occasional disputes & misunderstandings with both of them. His family was an average typical middle-class family where father was the only working member who provided economic support to the family while mother was a home-maker. The three kids shared a common room, living area & resources during childhood before they moved to another home in 2002.

Er. Mandeep’s childhood has been a mix of struggles, challenges and adventure that framed a foundation for an experiential learning to a greater complexity of struggles & challenges that was destined for his adulthood. At just the age of three when he first stepped out his house to attend the first day of nursery school, he slipped through the long iron staircase rolling straight to the ground. When he attained his consciousness he was in the hospital with eyes completely swollen and bruises all over his body. Another major accident took place when was eleven. He accidently stepped over a glass window lying horizontally few meters above the ground as some construction work was going at home. His left leg cut through a crack on the glass window completely piercing the skin with underlying muscles of the whole leg. There was a heavy blood loss and nobody at home was aware during the incident to provide immediate medical aid. He was partially disabled for more than six months but luckily for him these are now just the bodily scars. Other than these two major childhood accidents he has always been vulnerable to minor accidents and injuries on his body but slowly he learnt to endure all the pain as he grew-up in life. His ability to bear bodily pain made him stronger and developed his liking for wrestling as a sport, which he enjoyed playing with his elder brother and neighbourhood friends. He fondly watched WWF sports on television and practiced the moves & style with his elder brother however, he has never been a kind of person who picks-up fights with others. He also took-up Karate as an extra-curricular sport in his school days that he pursued for five or six years. He participated in inter-school Karate championship under the weight category of 70 – 80 kilograms at the age of thirteen and won a silver medal. Throughout his childhood, he actively enjoyed playing various indoor games like chess, carom-board, ludo, monopoly, playing cards, video-games and outdoor sports too like hockey, football, badminton, table tennis, squash, cricket, basketball and volley ball. He actively participated in sports days and annual day celebrations in his school Cricket and basket-ball became his favourite team sports during teenage years. He never developed a passion for any particular game or sport to take it forward as a profession because through his lens most elders of his family were entrepreneurs and business person and his father too was a business man (trader) who made money by selling goods & services.

He got an exposure to various cultures and traditions of the society during his early years as he participated in various cultural programs in school & neighbourhood whilst changed a number of schools from a traditional Hindu school to Christian missionary and a disciplined military school having children from both army and civilian backgrounds. His father finally admitted him along with the other siblings to The Army Public School (TAPS, New Delhi, India) so that they all could stay together as a family in and out of school. Being born to a traditional Sikh family, he got naturally endowed with the qualities of helping & serving others while participating in various community events, donation campaigns, serving food (Langar) at Gurudwara (Sikh place of worship) or naturally helped the elders of his family by doing activities and organizing things. He always observed the Sikh traditional values with close proximity and questioned his parents or elders about the need of doing so while comparing Sikh beliefs or values with other communities and religion. Mandeep has always been a curious child and question almost everything he watch, observe, see or hear. He remembers that his parents often used to get fed-up of his questions and say, “You should become a scientist and find out all the answers yourself rather disturb our peace.” In fact, they were right on their part, the first trait of a good scientist is to have a curious mind-set, question and inquire about things. Maybe, Er. Mandeep’s patents did not have a highly qualifying degree or it is the standard of education that has grown in the past five decades that now people often basis their talk using knowledge, facts and data. His major inspiration used to come from academic books, teachers & elders advice, music, games, sports, cultural activities as well as movies. Bollywood songs and movies have also played a significant role in inspiring him. He says, “Songs in the 90’s were lyrical, romantic & melodically musical and movies were full of stories filled with acts of heroism, acts of overcoming life struggles or acts of achieving difficult challenges while some other type of movies gave a thrilling, sci-fi or action-packed feeling. The Bollywood movies trend too has undergone a dramatic change from 90’s to 2000’s and beyond as they have become more socially, politically and historically oriented raising the curtain of open culture, personal freedom, leisure, enjoyment, violence, conspiracy & global trends that people like to follow.” However, for a person raised with human & family values of love, kindness, compassion and gratitude, it becomes difficult to digest or adapt to internationally driven narratives. Eventually, putting all his mind and attention towards academic learning amidst enjoying the natural learning process with extra-curricular and co-scholastic activities, Er. Mandeep was getting motivated to become an aspiring scientist in the future.

In secondary school, he was constantly challenged and struggled to cope-up with modern education because of linguistic barriers at home and school. His mother tongue is Punjabi and he often got confused with words & phrases from Hindi, Sanskrit and English with Punjabi. He took German as an optional language in school but after a year he was made to shift to learn Sanskrit instead of German. Moreover, English was the common medium of instruction for school subjects but unlike other school kids he never participated in school debates, speech competitions or plays rather he would spend most time in playing games & sports. Mathematics was his favourite subject as he enjoyed solving numerical sums and geometry problems. Although not a shy person but he struggled to excommunicate his thoughts & ideas with teachers and friends mainly because of limited English vocabulary. He often found himself competing with other students in overcoming linguistic barriers of communication, which sometimes also brought embarrassment to him. As he progressed from secondary school to senior school, it was only the language of numbers, lines, shapes, atoms, molecules, chemistry elements, and related academic vocabulary that emerged as his core strength in communication. Mathematics and science education helped in shaping his curiosity for material objects, rational thinking, logical reasoning and problem solving that he picked-up scientific skills for theoretical and practical use. He could now question logical learning objectives to others as well as give reasons, make explanations, cite examples and conclude his statements too. His parents, teachers, friends and classmates constantly supported and motivated him. Eventually, he was able to score 95% in mathematics & 92% in combined sciences in class 10 CBSE board examinations. He was now a much confident student who wanted to take up a career in science hence, decided to pursue high school education in science stream. Science education helped explore his creative side and exercise personal decision–making ability. This reflected positively as he developed keen interest in chemistry and decided to go for a chemical engineering degree course at the undergraduate level even though his father was in the business of recording & selling music who wanted him to pursue either music or computer sciences degree. Through his devotion and hard-work Mandeep scored distinction in all major science subjects in class 12 CBSE board examinations with score in chemistry being his highest at 91%. He also appeared for engineering entrance competitive exams to secure his position in some government or private engineering college in India.

For someone like Mandeep who has never been away from his family for schooling or even personal vacation, the decision to join Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University in Pune (Maharashtra), India for pursuing B.E. chemical engineering wasn’t easy. Moreover, education & general living in India was getting expensive too. His father decided to take a personal loan from a friend using his business network to cover-up for Mandeep’s university and living expenses. Mandeep has always been a distinction holder in academics but he didn’t know that the road to becoming a chemical engineer contained many barriers and blockages. He started enjoying his freedom in this new BVP campus city – exploring new things, making new friends and experimenting with his everyday life while trying to cope-up with college pressure and personal life. He received a major set-back during the first year itself as his results were not up to academic standards and his parents were called to the campus to reassure the head of chemical engineering department (HOD) that Mandeep would become more sincere in academics. Finally, he was given a second chance to repeat his exams and continue with the undergraduate degree in BVDUCOE. Mandeep realized his mistake and gradually learnt to overcome many adversities with his resilience, tolerance, persistence, patience and hard work. He improved his analytical capabilities while trying to understand the psychology of people, communities and organizations he interact during his undergraduate years. He also learnt new & innovative methods of engineering & technology as a pre-requisite for handling academic projects, laboratory workshops, internships and also underwent industrial training programs. As he progressed, he developed a new interest of working in the pharmaceutical industry with manufacturing units and bulk production systems as his career domain. His new desire was to enhance technical skills and aptitude for the bio-pharmaceutical industry to understand the drug development process from bio-discovery to manufacturing. He opted for biochemical engineering specialization in the final year of undergraduate studies and finally completed his four-year chemical engineering undergraduate degree program in 2006.

Er. Mandeep’s decision to pursue post-graduation degree form a UK University (University College London, London, England) was the most crucial and bold one for him in his early career as a young chemical engineering graduate. Being a self-sponsored candidate for obtaining higher education from England for a boy from an average Indian family was financially very stressful and upsetting. According to Er. Mandeep, “I couldn’t realize but I was standing on a crossway where I had to choose between my career ambitions or family business. I gave importance to my career.” He wanted to receive a higher academic degree having international recognition with best-in-class technical education to boost his career prospects in this new and promising field. He was particularly attracted to studying in the UK because UK & India enjoyed good diplomatic relations in trade, industry, law, business and education. In fact, British people and their culture have a deep influence on the education system of India, whether it is modern architecture or English language as a medium of instruction. Finally, it was decided that he will build his reputation and career by pursuing one-year full-time MSc. Biochemical Engineering degree at UCL considering the top international ratings associated with this course and a brand that delivers academic excellence in the heart of financial capital of the world (London). Although the program was only for one year but he could not complete it in the first year due to persistent personal health problems and family division issues that emerged back home. The head of the department and senior faculty members considering the merits of his initial performance and diligent efforts, gave him another chance to complete his remaining education and project work, which was finally met with success in the year 2008. Getting early career breakthroughs or setting on a path to success for building a great career is seldom straight. Many factors such as lack of experience, competition, personal reputation & background, health & financial stress and socioeconomic environment plays a significant role in discoverability of a candidate to start his career as a fresh graduate or post-graduate. These were some new roadblocks that forced Er. Mandeep to live under financial stress. For an instance, after completion of his post-graduate program in 2008, he once again realized that he was on the same crossway where he had to choose between personal career ambitions or go for a nonstandard job that wouldn’t bring him much experience in his desired field. He had already spent several lacks obtaining world-class technical education but the universe had another plan in store for him. He said, “I was forced to live in depression and even suffered grief resulting from the loss of my elder to a brain disease in 2010. I couldn’t keep control over my emotions and do nothing but gather my confidence & esteem in the form of an armor hoping for a better future.” He started preparing for higher competitive examinations to pursue further research or an advanced degree course such as M.Phil or Ph.D with the aid of government scholarship but couldn’t meet success despite several attempts.

Career

Er. Mandeep has always been an ambitious boy constantly working to upgrade his technical engineering skills and education to meet up to the expectations of the bio-pharmaceutical industry. Despite having undergone major internship training at UCL’s Advanced Centre of Biochemical Engineering (ACBE Labs, UCL, UK) in 2007 for a pilot scale project on FAB (fragment antibody) extraction & purification; and, prior in 2006 at a private pharmaceutical manufacturing unit Franklin Remedies Pvt. Ltd., India producing medicinal formulations on a commercial scale, he couldn’t succeed in attracting employers through his resume (curriculum vitae). Upon returning to India after completion of his MSc. Biochemical Engineering from UCL in September 2008, he joined his family business with his elder brother and father. He started working as a garment retail store assistant manager in his family-owned shop that were associated with brands like “Allen Solly” & “Blackberrys” on a franchisee model. He was going through a period of transition trying to understand this family owned business model amidst preparing for higher competitive examinations. He worked there for about 1.5 – 2 years looking after store merchandise operations, store management and sales reporting to company’s head office. This brought him some job experience of business management but soon after the expiry of his elder brother in June 2010, things changed again due to family circumstances. He got his first career breakthrough in December 2010 with Religare Technologies (a unit of Fortis Hospital Group) as a customer care executive in a medical healthcare process associated with SRL diagnostic labs. His job-role was majorly to coordinate with the patients and back-office operations for reporting of patient’s medical records. The job required handling large quantity of in-bound calls for providing information to customers about their test inquiries or making necessary arrangements for customers like sample pick-up, emailing test results, scheduling doctor appointment or rescheduling of test & so on as well as coordinating with the back-office team for medical reporting purposes and coordinating with team members like subject-matter expert and IT team for inbound process operations. His job required a display of good communication skills and calling etiquettes other than handling technical data associated with medical reporting, team coordination skills and sometimes explanation & interpretation of the test results to customers.

Six months later in May 2011, he got an opportunity to simultaneously work & pursue a certificate course in medical transcription with J.C. Infosoft Technologies Pvt. Ltd. The process of medical transcription involved transcribing healthcare records of US patient for medical insurance reporting purposes in USA. He started working as a medical transcriptionist (MT) while he was learning about the medical transcription production process and after completing MT certificate program he was promoted as a MT trainer, production assistant and later as an editor and proofreader in the same company. He trained new batches for improving English language skills, medical & pharmaceutical terminology, transcription production & reporting as well as technical skills required for the job. As MT transcriptionist his job role was converting audio file into written transcripts with necessary details of the patient’s treatment and assessment procedures; and finally, screening the transcripts for quality control, editing and proof-read before going to the technology bench. The transcription production, editing and proofreading process is similar to traditional publication process that requires good reading and grammatical skills. This program and its associated job helped him gain insights to the medical, pharmaceutical, hospital healthcare & medical insurance industry. This also gave him an opportunity to research on medical conditions, doctor’s analysis, diagnostic procedures, treatments and medicines used for treatment of various common ailments. In summer 2012, he also got an opportunity to assist Prof. G.S. Sodhi, SGTB Khalsa College, Delhi University (DU) in a short-term biotechnology based project titled “Analysis of sweat residue in fingerprinting deposition” that was aimed at understanding the forensic science approach in biometric analysis of human fingerprints under various physiological factors. Soon after the completion of this project, the Government of India launched its own biometric enrolment & identification scheme for Indian citizens under their flagship program “Aadhar UID”.

In a quest to gain independent professional identity, Er. Mandeep Singh in November 2013 decided to set-up his own proprietary business “VMG Biotech” for providing contract research & consultancy services to medical, pharmaceutical, healthcare, food & beverage, chemical & allied industries. By this time he had already made a major career shift of being a researcher and professional trainer. He got his first few research projects of testing herbal, pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations from independent firms. He received his first work contract in November 2014 from the editorial team of Chronicle Pharmabiz Magazine (Saffron Media Publications, India) and started contributing research articles on a regular basis for their magazine. Besides that, he continued providing technical consultancy, research and documentation services to independent firms and local businessmen. In May 2015, he launched his first commercial publication “Fundamental Skills in Scientific Communication”, which was a training cum reference manual aimed for development of scientific skills among young graduates & working professionals like scientists, engineers & para-medical staff. Soon after the book launch, he also started receiving training workshop projects from local institutes & coaching centers. Amidst his professional struggle, he also came in contact with various NGO’s and local charitable organizations where he voluntarily participated in organizing health camps for distributing free first-aid kits, life-saving medical supplies, essential food or toiletry supplies that were aimed at improving basic living conditions of local citizens in the community or society. These trust societies also organized educational and mental health awareness workshops at schools, colleges & local community centers from time to time. Volunteering for a noble cause is also a form of service (sewa) according to Sikhism. This helped him to reconnect to the roots of Sikhism again that in turn helped him to overcome personal emotional crises that he was suffering in the form of depression or psychosis.

Going forward, he made little progress as a researcher but expanded more on the academic front while providing education and counselling services to students of various age-groups. He started receiving more projects for education services rather research into medicinal or pharmaceutical formulations. He received tutoring, skills training & educational content development contracts from organizations like HTLC (Englishmate & Studymate brand), Aakash Institute, NCR Eduservices pvt. ltd., Edumaats consulting pvt. ltd. as well as local private coaching centers. He prepared & delivered customized practice study-material and coached students for board exams as per their affiliation to CBSE, ICSE & IGCSE & IB boards. By 2023, he has tutored more than 5500+ students of various age groups studying from grade 6 to grade 12 and helped them in improving their cognitive learning behavior, academic performance and exam results with an average improvement in student’s grade from 50% to 90%. His got established as a STEM educator while teaching subjects like mathematics, general sciences, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology & biotechnology. He also provides vocational training to students on topics like spoken English, communication skills, medical transcription, scientific skills and life skills. In 2025, he launched another publication “Textbook on English Grammar and Communication” aimed at development of vocational English skills among students. With major trend shift towards technology-aided learning adopted by many schools in 2020, he also upgraded himself to cater to the technical needs of the students for online coaching along with traditional offline coaching methods. In 2023, he launched his personal coaching application “Scientific Communication App” with the help of a technology provider “Classplus – India’s No. 1 Teaching App”. Recently, Er. Mandeep has also started providing education, career, skills-mapping, psychological and mental health counselling services to students & parents of students aiding them with clarity, focus, direction & mindset related to current as well as futuristic trends on higher education, industry standards, job-roles and professional skills aptitude. He has helped 1500+ parents in transforming thinking-capacity, imagination and behavior of students towards education that enables them strike a good balance between school & home life. He regularly organizes educational workshops in schools and community centers for students & parents in association with NGOs and charitable organizations. His new identity as a self-published author really inspires him to write more and contribute more to the field of education.
