Each chapter includes sufficient vocabulary terms used in a particular subject disciple of science (or sub-discipline) along with a structured approach for understanding important topics related to that subject. Each scientific term focus on ‘etymological aspect of word’ i.e. ‘origin and history of language’. Each chapter contains “Thesaurus” of technical science terms used in a particular subject of science – Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Earth Sciences, Geology, Biology (Life Sciences, Ecology, Taxonomy, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Virology, Genetics, & Biochemistry), Agriculture science, Medical science, Psychology, Pharmacology, and Biotechnology. A well-structured approach is used by the author in describing scientific terms such that they outline basic definition, important technical concept & scope of discussion for using the term with relevant examples. Part III of the book (Ch 17 – Ch 19) focuses on scientific & technical writing skills, science information resources, scientific communication practices, research ethics in science and typical formats of scientific reports like laboratory reports, quality reports, manufacturing report, medical or clinical report as well as structure of research thesis. This part focuses on relevant scientific attitude for information gathering, reporting, research & analysis. Finally, Part IV of the book (Ch 20 – Ch 23) covers basic knowledge on use of computer and internet. It includes understanding of basic IT skills that forms a precursor of scientific reporting, analysis & presentation. It includes chapters that frame understanding of technical terms & concepts covering computer parts, internet resources, word processors, spreadsheets, power point presentation and tools that are used in these computer based applications.

Themes

  • The pedagogical framework for “Fundamental Skills in Scientific Communication” focuses on exploring the relationship between the study of language and science as these always go hand-in-hand as a part of school education philosophy that influences imagination, thinking capacity and working behavior among children. The readers shall discover the interconnection between English language and core sciences to reinforce what they have already learnt in school. No educational book or training course can impart complete knowledge on science but through the medium of this book the author has made an attempt to provide up-to-date knowledge reference for basic scientific terms and concepts in the form of ‘scientific vocabulary’, which is relevant to high students, teachers, academicians & research professionals.
  • The primary aspect of this book is to help students build basic scientific vocabulary through understanding of etymology of scientific terms and exploring the interconnection of terms with the rules of English word formation and English grammar for cognitive retention & linguistic delivery. The book begins by revisiting the basics of English grammar with chapters like as parts of speech, prefix, suffix and English word formation (lexicography) rules. In the next part, the book focuses extensively on development of scientific vocabulary via each chapter based on a particular subject of science. Each chapter reports scientific terms used in the subject along with the concept and theories related to these terms. Each scientific term is broken into its specific morpheme & word syllables and explained in detail citing the language origin of the term and its original meaning. Each scientific term is defined using the rules of English grammar and associates alternative usage expressions of the same term as an exemplary model. For example, “Chemistry = Latin (Alchemy), Greek (Khemia), word root formation (Chem- + -ist + -(a)ry), Synonym: “Noun”, Definition: It pertains to the (study of) naturally occurring substances present on earth”. Usage examples, Chemical, Chemically, Chemist, Biochemical, Organic chemistry, Physical chemistry, Analytical chemistry, Chemosis, Chemotherapy, Chemoreceptor etc… Each subject is discussed in sufficient details to cover all important topics with definitions and concepts included within each topic.
  • The secondary purpose of this book is to help learners understand basic scientific communication practices like use of information resources, scientific journals, understanding the structure of scientific & technical reports, professional thesis writing as well as the role of computers and information technology in communication. The latter part of the book focuses on scientific and technical writing. Many professional degree courses have technical writing included as a prerequisite requirement such as writing technical essays, dissertation, project, case studies research thesis for assessment of technical writing skills of the student. Hence, latter parts includes chapters on general principles of information gathering, research ethics, and basic structure of writing scientific reports for academic purposes as well as writing research thesis. This part of the book also contains a chapter that explores the structure of various forms of technical reports used in the industry like engineering reports, quality reports, medical reports, clinical reports, analytical reports or manufacturing and sales reports.
  • The book also aims to develop scientific skills and professional working attitude required for building a career in the field of science, technology, engineering or medicine. The book also dwells on the use of computers, writing software like word processors, power point presentations, spreadsheets and other communication tools along with the role of information technology as a part of discussing the importance of communication technology in scientific communication practices.
