Nikhil Chinapa is an Indian disc jockey, DJ , television host , VJ, music entrepreneur and festival curator. He’s widely seen as one of the first pioneers of electronic dance music (EDM) in India and he is also credited for bringing the genre into the mainstream Indian audiences. Chinapa started getting real attention after winning the MTV VJ Hunt in 1999 and then he became one of MTV India’s most recognizable faces through shows like MTV Select, MTV Roadies and MTV Splitsvilla. He is the co-founder of Submerge, he was also a former co-founder of Sunburn Festival, and he curates Vh1 Supersonic. In 2026 , he turned up as a contestant on Amazon Prime Video reality show The Alliance.

Early Life & Education

Nikhil Chinapa was born on 6 June 1973 in Bangalore now Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. His father name Lieutenant Colonel Bhemaiah Chinapa , a paratrooper in the Indian Army, and Ganga Chinapa (mother). Because his father’s military routine, he basically spent his childhood in many cities around India , including Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Agra and Bengaluru . He attended several schools during that early phase.

He studied at Hyderabad Public School , Faust High School , St. George’s School, Agra, and St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School , Bengaluru . Later on, Chinapa earned a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from B.M.S. College of Engineering , Bengaluru. During those years, his interest in music, kept growing, so he began DJing for college events , and also for private parties.

Career

Nikhil Chinapa started his television career after winning the MTV VJ Hunt in 1999, and that put him right up there as one of MTV India’s first and most influential VJs. He hosted MTV Select, bringing in international music and artists to Indian viewers, and later he got tied with a bunch of popular youth-leaning television shows.

As time moved on he hosted or judged a lot of shows like MTV Roadies, MTV Splitsvilla, India’s Got Talent, and MTV Rock On. From 2017 onwards, he turned into one of the most recognizable Gang Leaders on MTV Roadies, mentoring contestants across multiple seasons.

Chinapa also played a very real, transformative role in India’s electronic music space. Back in 2003 he co-founded Submerge, which is often mentioned as India’s first major EDM artist management and event company. Then in 2007 he co-founded Sunburn Festival , and that one grew into something massive, becoming among Asia’s largest electronic dance music festivals. After he stepped away from Sunburn in 2013 , he co-founded Vh1 Supersonic, another widely known music festival that keeps spotlighting both global and Indian electronic music artists.

He works as a DJ and music curator, so he’s performed at major festivals and club scenes across India and internationally. He’s also made contributions to Bollywood through music remixes and soundtrack collaborations, the kind that help certain tracks travel farther.

Personal Life

Nikhil Chinapa married DJ Pearl Miglani in 2006 , after dating for several years. The couple welcomed their daughter in 2018.[3][4]
