Pawan Singh is a renowned Indian politician, playback singer, actor, music composer, and stage performer, widely celebrated as one of the most influential stars of the Bhojpuri film industry. Known as the "Power Star," he started out as a harmonium player at neighborhood concerts before becoming well-known as a playback vocalist. He quickly became well-known for his strong voice and exuberant performances, both in Bhojpuri and mainstream Bollywood, where he provided the voice of Stree 2.
Throughout his acting, singing, and composition career, Singh has produced a number of successful singles and performances that have won awards. Two International Bhojpuri Film Awards have been given to him, confirming his reputation as one of the most renowned and adaptable people in the entertainment sector. With his unparalleled charm and skill, Pawan Singh, who is well-known for his iconic roles in movies like Pratigya (2008), Satya (2017), Crack Fighter (2019), Raja (2019), Sher Singh (2019), Mera Bharat Mahaan (2022), and Har Har Gange (2023), continues to rule both the stage and the screen.[1]
Early Life & Education
Pawan Singh was born on 5 January 1986 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, into a Hindu Rajput family. His mother, Pratima Devi, was a housewife, and his father, Rama Shankar Singh, was a farmer. He was raised in a modest, traditional home with two older brothers and a sister named Mala Singh.[2]
From an early age, Singh demonstrated a keen interest in music. He began playing the harmonium at local events and stage shows, which launched his career as a playback singer. Despite financial challenges, his family remained steadfast in their support of his passion for music. Singh's perseverance and dedication were reportedly evident in the fact that he regularly rode a bicycle long distances just to participate in musical performances and cultural events. After his family moved to Arrah, Bihar, Pawan Singh continued his education there after finishing elementary school in Kolkata. He attended H.N.K. High School for his intermediate education before continuing on to Maharaja College in Arrah to finish his degree. His ability to successfully manage his academic work and his growing musical interests during his academic years ultimately shaped his future in the Bhojpuri entertainment industry.
Career
Music Career
At a very young age, Pawan Singh began performing at stage shows and cultural events in his hometown, marking the beginning of his musical career.[3] He had a strong foundation as a singer from his early musical experiences, and he quickly began producing Bhojpuri pop records. Odhaniya Wali (1997), his debut album, marked the start of his professional career as a playback singer.
Pawan Singh became well-known across the country in 2008 after his hit album Lollipop Lageli was released. He became a household name and was dubbed a "Power Star" after the title track, "Lollipop Lagelu," became an iconic Bhojpuri song. With the hit song "Saniya Mirza Cut Nathuniya" from his album Don't Touch My Body that same year, his fame was further cemented.
Singh kept experimenting with different musical genres, and in 2020 he made his Bollywood playback debut with the song "Kamariya Hila Rahi Hai," which featured Lauren Gottlieb, an American dancer-actress. Following this, he released singles like "Current" (with Payal Dev) and "Babuni Tere Rang Me" (with Tridha Choudhury), demonstrating his versatility outside of the Bhojpuri industry.[4] Singh and renowned playback singer Sonu Nigam worked together on a Chhath devotional song in 2021, which was well-received. He experimented with Bhojpuri covers of well-known Hindi songs that same year, including "Baarish Ban Jaana" and "Lut Gaye," which was originally sung by Jubin Nautiyal. Additionally, he added his distinct regional flair to the Bhojpuri version of the timeless Bollywood classic "Tumsa Koi Pyara" from the 1994 movie Raja Babu.
Singh's versatility across languages and genres was demonstrated when he expanded his collaborations with well-known Haryanvi singer Renuka Panwar and released "Jindagi," a Bhojpuri-Haryanvi fusion song. As one of the most popular and significant playback singers in the Bhojpuri scene today, Pawan Singh's songs frequently transcend geographical borders and connect with listeners all over India.
Political Career
When Pawan Singh was declared the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) candidate for the Asansol Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal, he formally entered politics ahead of the 2024 Indian general election. Reactions to his candidacy were divided; some applauded his widespread appeal as a Bhojpuri superstar who could relate to the general public, while others chastised the choice due to his contentious public persona. Singh, however, retracted his nomination a few days after it was made public, claiming that he had stepped aside for personal reasons. Singh returned to electoral politics in 2025, this time from his native Bihar state. Even though senior leader Upendra Kushwaha, the official nominee of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), had already been put forward, he announced his intention to run as an independent from the Karakat Lok Sabha constituency. The BJP claimed that Pawan Singh's actions harmed its reputation and expelled him for "anti-party activities" and "indiscipline" in May 2025. His actions were viewed as a direct challenge to the alliance.[5]
Pawan Singh's campaign in Karakat garnered a lot of media attention in spite of the political controversy. He was a well-known candidate because of his star power, music-filled rallies, and capacity to attract sizable crowds. Critics questioned his political background and contended that his candidacy might divide votes in the area, while his supporters portrayed him as a voice of the youth and Bhojpuri-speaking community.</ref> [6]
Despite not winning the election, Singh became well-known in Bihar as a result of his campaign. Given his popularity and capacity to engage the public, political analysts characterized his entry into electoral politics as the start of a potential long-term political journey.
