Samrat Choudhary is an Indian politician. He serves as the Chief Minister of Bihar since his election in 2026.[1] He belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which makes him the first person from his party to become Chief Minister of Bihar. He worked as Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar from 2024 until 2026.

Early Life & Education

Samrat Choudhary was born on 16 November 1968 in Munger district of Bihar. His father Shakuni Choudhary and mother Parvati Devi dedicated themselves to political activities. He obtained his advanced education at Madurai Kamaraj University. His educational qualifications have sometimes been a topic of public discussion.

Career

Samrat Choudhary started his political career in 1990. His electoral career began in 2000 when he won the Parbatta seat to become a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA). His political career included a role as Agriculture Minister during the time of Rabri Devi's government.[2] [3][4]

He became a member of Janata Dal (United) and held a ministerial position within the Bihar government. His membership in the Legislative Council (MLC) lasted from 2014 until 2025 through multiple terms.

He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2018 which led to his emergence as a major political figure in Bihar. The party appointed him as the President of BJP Bihar state unit in 2023.

He became Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar in 2024 after Nitish Kumar took office and he managed key government sectors which included Finance and Panchayati Raj together with Urban Development.

The 2025 Bihar Assembly elections saw BJP win the most seats in the assembly. He became the BJP leader in Bihar after this and subsequently assumed the position of Home Minister.

He became the Chief Minister of Bihar in April 2026 following Nitish Kumar's resignation from the position. He became the first BJP leader in state history to occupy this office.[5][6]
