Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Santosh Iyer is an Indian international cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman who plays in the top or middle order. He represents India in international cricket, Mumbai in domestic cricket, and captains Punjab Kings in the IPL. He serves as the India's vice captain for their ODI team.
Early Life & Education
Shreyas Iyer was born on 6 December 1994 in Chembur, Mumbai, Maharashtra. He started playing cricket at a very young age.
At the games, he played baseball until he was recognized for his explosively hitting ability. Coach Pravin Amre discovered him at the Shivaji Park Gymkhana when he was 18 years old. At this time, he was put under training to help him harness his skills and game knowledge.
During his early days of playing cricket, he resembled Virender Sehwag in that he was fearless in stroke play.
At school, he studied at Don Bosco High School (Matunga, Mumbai). For balancing his academics with his passion for cricket, he played cricket for his school team.
After finishing his studies he joined college of Ramniranjan Anandilal Podar of Commerce and Economics at Mumbai. He also played cricket for his college team which won many championships. It is during this phase that he earned the name of a young cricketing star. [1][2]
Career
Domestic Career
Iyer started his domestic cricket career for Mumbai in 2014. He made his List A debut in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and his first-class debut in the Ranji Trophy.
Iyer began his first Ranji season by scoring 809 runs which established a successful beginning to his professional career. He achieved greater success during the following season by scoring 1,321 runs at bat with an average of more than 73. He became the highest run-scorer of that season and one of the few players to cross 1,300 runs in a single Ranji Trophy.
Iyer established a T20 cricket record in 2019 when he scored 147 runs during a match which represented one of the highest T20 scores by an Indian batsman at that time.
He has also played for India B and has led teams in domestic tournaments which demonstrated his ability to lead others during his early career development.
International Career
In November 2017, Shreyas Iyer made his T20I debut for India against New Zealand. Later, he made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in December 2017 and has established himself as an important member of India’s Limited Overs team. He made his way into the record books in January 2020 when he scored his first ODI century against New Zealand.Shreyas Iyer made his Test debut against New Zealand in November 2021, and made a phenomenal debut scoring 105 runs and 65 runs in his two innings. He became the first Indian cricketer in history to score both a century and a half-century in his Test debut. Shreyas Iyer has also continued to perform at a very high level in 2022, and he was named ICC Player of the Month for February 2022. He can be considered a consistent performer across all formats as he was also a significant contributor to the Indian cricket team reaching the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2023, where he played a key role by scoring an important century in the semi-finals against New Zealand, and he was also a key cog during India’s run to the 2023 Asia Cup title and ultimately helping India win the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.Although Shreyas Iyer has suffered from multiple injuries throughout his career, he has been able to recover from those injuries to continue being an integral member of the India National Team.[3]
IPL (Franchise) Career
Shreyas Iyer began his IPL career with Delhi Daredevils in 2015, where he scored 439 runs in his debut season and won the Emerging Player of the Year award. He was appointed captain in 2018 and led the team to significant progress, guiding them to the playoffs in 2019 and their first-ever IPL final in 2020. In 2022, he was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders and named captain, though he faced a challenging season and missed much of 2023 due to injury. However, he made a strong comeback in 2024 and led Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title victory, marking one of the biggest achievements of his career. In 2025, Punjab Kings acquired him for ₹26.75 crore, making him one of the most expensive players in IPL history. As captain, he guided the team to the IPL final, becoming the first captain in IPL history to lead three different teams to the finals
