Surya Kant is an Indian judge currently serving as the 53rd Chief Justice of India from 23 November 2025.[1][2][3] In the past, he was a judge in the Himachal Pradesh High Court and the Punjab & Haryana High Court, as well as a Senior Advocate and Advocate General of Haryana. In addition, he is the ex officio patron-in-chief of the National Legal Services Authority and a guest of the National University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi.
Early Life & Education
Kant was born 10 February 1962 in Petwar village, Hisar, Haryana, into a middle-class family. His father, Madan Gopal Sharma, was a Sanskrit teacher.[4][5]
In 1981, he graduated from Government Post Graduate College in Hisar; in 1984, he obtained a Bachelor of Laws from Maharishi Dayanand University in Rohtak; and in 2011, he obtained a Master of Laws with First Class First from Kurukshetra University.[6][7]
Career
Kant began his legal career as an Advocate and became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana. On January 9, 2004, he was appointed as a judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court.
In 2007, he was proposed for two terms in a row as a member of the National Legal Services Authority. On October 5, 2018, he was named Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. On May 24, 2019, he took the oath of office as a judge of the Supreme Court of India. As of November 23, 2025, he is India's 53rd Chief Justice.

Achievements and Recognition
Surya Kant became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana and later served as a member, and then Patron-in-Chief of the National Legal Services Authority. He is also recognised for attending and organising several prestigious legal conferences throughout his career. And now in 2025, he becomes the 53rd Chief Justice Of India.
