The father of Alka Kumari, Shri Dharam Dev Mishra, was in business and had a factory at Rourkela, Odisha. Due to the business of her father, the initial period of Alka was spent in Rourkela and she got her primary education there.
Thereafter, the different stages of her education and life were spent in Bhagalpur, Delhi, and Rajasthan. Different locations of staying and studies gave her a different socio-cultural environment.
