Rashid Khan Arman is an international cricketer. He plays for Afghanistan’s national team as well as franchises worldwide. Considered one of the game’s greatest leg spin bowlers today, Rashid is noted for his great accuracy, variety, and excellent ability to perform under pressure.[1]

Rashid has played franchises globally, such as Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League (BBL), Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), and MI New York in Major League Cricket (MLC). Due to his all-around skills and excellent consistency, Rashid is viewed as one of the top T20 players in the world.[2]

Early Life and Education

Rashid Khan was born in 20 September 1998 Nangarhar Province, eastern Afghanistan, into a Shinwari Pashtun family and he had numerous brothers and sisters.[3]

Rashid loved playing cricket and often played cricket with his brothers. His cricketing idols growing up were all-rounder Shahid Afridi of Pakistan and batsman AB de Villiers of South Africa. Rashid was heavily influenced by Afridi.[4]

Rashid Khan was educated at Islamia College in Peshawar, where he focused on Computer Science and entered college based on his ability to play cricket. Initially, Rashid focused on batting but eventually developed into a very good leg-spin bowler as his main skill set.[5]

Career

Rashid Khan began his cricket career at a very young age and soon became a prominent player in the cricket world because of his exceptional skills in leg spin and ability to perform under pressure. Rashid made his debut in international cricket in 2015 and soon became one of the most important players in the Afghan cricket team. He has achieved many milestones in his career, including becoming the youngest captain in international cricket and one of the fastest bowlers to reach major wicket-taking records. Rashid has not only made a name in international cricket but has also become one of the most prominent players in domestic cricket tournaments around the world, regarded as one of the most important T20 players in modern cricket.

International Career

Rashid Khan made his One Day International (ODI) debut for Afghanistan on October 18, 2015, against Zimbabwe and then made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut on October 26, 2015. His early performances displayed his talent for controlling the game as well as for taking wickets.

In June 2017, he produced one of the best bowling performances by an Associate Nation in ODIs when he took seven (7) wickets for 18 runs against the West Indies. As a result, Rashid began establishing himself as one of the brightest stars in all of international cricket.

  • Youngest player to reach 1st place on the ICC T20I Bowling Rankings

Rashid was part of the history-making first Test match played by Afghanistan in India on June 14, 2018. The match was the beginning of a new chapter for Afghanistan and cricket; however, it was very difficult in many aspects.

Rashid became the youngest captain in the history of international cricket in March 2018, when he captained Afghanistan for the first time in an ODI at just 19 years old.

He represented Afghanistan at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, wherein he made his contributions both offensively and defensively; however, his contributions were not enough to win the World Cup.

He has broken a significant number of records:

- Fastest player to get to 100 ODI wickets (in 44 ODIs) - Fastest player to take 50 T20I wickets (by calendar time) - Fastest player to reach 100 T20I wickets (in 53) - Most wickets taken by a male player in T20 International matches (until 2025).

In 2021, he resigned as captain of Afghanistan's T20 World Cup team because of team selection issues. However, he returned to captaining this side in 2022.

Test Cricket

Rashid made his test cricket debut against India in June 2018, but despite conceding a lot of runs in this game, he earned some important experience from this match going forward.

In 2019, he made history by becoming the first-ever Afghan bowler to take a five-wicket haul in Test cricket when he did so against Ireland.
