Shubman Gill is an Indian cricketer. He plays for the Indian National Cricket Team in all formats of the game. He has signed with the Punjab state team to play domestic cricket and serves as captain of the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Having made history in One Day International (ODI) cricket for many records, he holds the record for the fastest player to score 2000 and 2500 runs, and is the youngest player to score a double century in ODIs.[1]

Early Life & Education

Shubman Gill was born in September 8, 1999, Fazilka, Punjab, India. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, an aspiring cricketer, also worked as a farmer and had a key role in Shubman's development as a cricketer. Gill began playing cricket as a young boy, and his father arranged for Shubman to practice under his father's guidance when he became serious about playing cricket.[2]

Gill's family moved to Mohali to pursue better facilities for Shubman's cricket training when he seriously began to meet the expectations of his family. As Shubman continued to excel in junior-age cricket, he began receiving positive feedback from coaches regarding his ability to perform at a high level. Gill also scored consistently in youth tournaments, and in an inter-district U/16 match, Gill scored 351 runs. Shubman Gill quickly climbed through the ranks of junior cricket in Punjab based on his early successes. [3]

Career

Domestic Career

Gill made his List A debut for Punjab during the 2016-17 Vijay Hazare Trophy and quickly gained attention by scoring a century in only his second match. He made his first-class debut in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy and scored a century early in his career.

Gill had a breakthrough domestic season in 2018-19 as a result of being the leading run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy, including a double century. His excellent performances have led to him captaining India A as well as in domestic competitions, like the Duleep Trophy and Deodhar Trophy, and playing county cricket in England with Glamorgan.

International Career

Gill gained international attention at the 2018 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup when he was India's leading run-scorer and Player of the Tournament.

In 2019, he made his ODI debut, and in 2020, he made his Test debut during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, playing a substantial role in India's first-ever Test series victory in Australia. Over the next few years, he established himself as a dependable top-order batsman.

In 2023, Gill achieved many milestones:

Franchising Career

Gill began his IPL career with Kolkata Knight Riders franchise in 2018 when he was awarded Emerging Player Award in the IPL season 2019. In 2022, Gill joined the newly formed Gujarat Titans and played a pivotal role in the team's historic title-winning first season. In 2023 season he had a record-setting season by scoring 890 runs, winning Orange Cap and being named captain of the franchise.
