Joy K. Mathew is an Indian–Australian filmmaker, actor, and writer. He is renowned for using film as a tool for social change, making movies that uphold moral principles, humanity, and compassion. He has produced 19 films and numerous documentaries over the course of his more than three-decade career. Themes like family, human rights, environmental preservation, organ donation, and global peace are all prominent in his writings.[1][2]

In addition, Joy is a humanitarian who mentors aspiring filmmakers, promotes social causes, and oversees global artistic endeavors that have set records.

Early Life & Education

Joy K. Mathew was born in Thaikkattussery, Cherthala, Alappuzha of Kerala, India as the eldest son of Indian Army veteran K. J. Mathew and Mary Mathew. He grew up with his siblings Jessie, Jolly, and Jiji. He had a strong interest in theatre from an early age, writing short scripts with social messages and taking part in church and school plays starting in Class 4. His passion for movies had grown by the time he was in seventh grade.

He completed his schooling in his hometown before moving to Bangalore for additional education. There, he earned multiple degrees in computer science, electronics, journalism, and film studies. Joy began his career as a journalist, which had an impact on his artistic vision and storytelling style.

Joy was also one of the twenty-five students chosen to receive professional theatre training at Kerala People's Arts Club (KPAC), one of the most prominent theatre organizations in the state. E.M.S. Namboodiripad, Kerala's first chief minister, awarded him the Best Performer Certificate for his outstanding performance in the program.

Joy also traveled to Kuwait for work-related reasons in his early career. He continued to be involved in journalism, film, and social service despite living overseas, particularly during the 2006 tsunami, when he helped with the rehabilitation of impacted families.[3][4]

Career

Joy K. Mathew has worked as an actor, director, writer, producer, and cinematographer across films and documentaries. His filmmaking journey is guided by a mission to address social issues and uplift people through meaningful stories. He has also trained young artists and conducted film workshops in Queensland, including programs supported by the United Nations Association of Australia.[5][6]

Joy played a major role in bringing Malayalam cinema to Australia. He screened Malayalam films with English subtitles in theatres and created platforms for new talents through film training, theatre shows, and cultural events.

He is the founder and President of the Association of Movie Lovers Australia (AMLA), the first Malayalam film organisation in Australia.

Achievements and Recognition

He has directed a number of films and documentaries that have won praise both domestically and abroad. He trained Arshaan Ameer, who became the youngest documentary director in history, and helped his daughters Augnes and Teresa set a world record by memorizing every national anthem. The Queensland government recognized his documentary The Dependence, and Salute the Nation set a world record by showcasing artists from 75 different nations. In addition, he is credited with producing Ghost Paradise, the first Malayalam film produced in Queensland, mentoring up-and-coming filmmakers, and advancing Malayalam cinema in Australia.[7][8][9]

Joy believes that art must serve humanity, and he lives by the motto: “You do not need anyone’s permission to turn dreams into reality — only courage. Compassion, moral principles, social responsibility, global peace, and environmental consciousness are all continuously present in his films. Through his work, he employs film as a potent tool for empathy, education, and constructive social change in addition to being a source of entertainment.

Personal Life

Joy is married to Jacqueline, a registered nurse in Australia. He has two daughters, Augnes and Teresa, both university students who also assist in filmmaking projects. Particularly during his significant accomplishments and world-record endeavors, his family has been a solid support system.
