Dr. Sankha Subhra Devbarman is an Indian poet, novelist, and cultural voice from Tripura, North East India. He works to advance the literary and cultural heritage of Northeast India through his efforts to promote these traditions to audiences worldwide. Dunster Business School in Switzerland awarded him an honorary doctorate degree because of his work in tourism literature and cultural heritage promotion.[1][2]
Early Life & Background
Dr. Sankha Subhra Devbarman was born on 2 April 1967 in Agartala, Tripura, India. His family background, which possesses deep cultural traditions, created an atmosphere that brought him up as a person of great importance. His father, Salil Debbarman, led the Gana Mukti Parishad as a major political figure while serving on the Agartala Municipal Corporation. His mother, Sabita Debbarman, works as a writer and social activist while participating in theatrical arts and serving her community through her work with the Tripura State Commission for Women.
Radha Mohan Thakur, his great grandfather, worked as a judge and held the position of chief judge while leading the Tripura Royal Army. He played an important role in formalizing Kokborok grammar. His great grandmother, Kumudini Devi, belonged to royalty as the daughter of King Birchandra Manikya.
Career
Dr. Devbarman began his literary career through the writing of poetry and short stories which eventually led to his success as a novelist. His regional stories bring Tripura and Northeast Indian traditions to readers through his works which present the area's cultural heritage and historical background.
The award-winning novel Banakuntalar Upakhyan achieved national acclaim which led to its transformation into a six-part television series for Doordarshan. His literary works became academic resources when one of his short story collections received inclusion in the Assamese University curriculum at Silchar.
His work extends beyond literature because he worked as Regional Director of North India for the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. His job responsibilities included developing tourism activities and advancing cultural initiatives through his work in this position.
He represents India at international conferences while working to promote cultural exchange and educational initiatives and community development projects.[3]

Dunster Business School in Switzerland awarded him an honorary doctorate degree for his achievements in tourism literature and cultural promotion work. December 2025 will host the official convocation ceremony.
