Sidharth Malhotra (born 16 January 1985) is an Indian actor who works in Hindi cinema. He began his career as a model before assisting filmmaker Karan Johar in My Name is Khan (2010). He made his acting debut with Johar’s Student of the Year (2012), alongside Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, which earned him a Filmfare nomination for Best Male Debut.
Over the years, Malhotra has played diverse roles ranging from action to romance and biopics, with Ek Villain (2014), Kapoor & Sons (2016), Marjaavaan (2019), and Shershaah (2021) marking milestones in his career. Sidharth Malhotra was born on 16 January 1985 in a Punjabi Hindu family in Delhi. His father, Sunil Malhotra, was a former captain in the Merchant Navy, and his mother, Rimma Malhotra, is a homemaker. He has an elder brother, Harshad Malhotra, who is a banker.
He attended Don Bosco School, Delhi, and later studied at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, University of Delhi. Malhotra began modeling at the age of 18 but grew dissatisfied after four years and decided to pursue acting.
Career
Early Career (2004–2012)
Before becoming an actor, Malhotra worked as a model and appeared in print campaigns and fashion shows. He quit after four years due to lack of satisfaction and auditioned for roles in films. In 2010, he worked as an assistant director to Karan Johar on My Name is Khan.
Breakthrough and Establishment (2012–2016)
Sidharth made his acting debut in Student of the Year (2012), a coming-of-age drama directed by Karan Johar. His performance was appreciated, and he received a Filmfare nomination for Best Male Debut.
He followed this with Hasee Toh Phasee (2014), a romantic comedy opposite Parineeti Chopra, which was a moderate success. His major breakthrough came with Ek Villain (2014), an action-romance co-starring Shraddha Kapoor, which became one of the year’s biggest hits.
